Lighting parameters – what to pay attention to?

When choosing an LED lighting supplier, it’s important to pay attention to key parameters. These include:

Luminous efficiency

Measured in lumens (lm), it determines the amount of light emitted by the liminaire. Higher luminous flux means greater brightness and lighting efficiency.

Power and energy consumption

Power (watts) and energy consumption (kWh) impact operating costs. Fixtures with lower energy consumption can generate long-term savings.

Light color

The choice of color temperature (measured in Kelvin, K) affects the atmosphere and efficiency of the lighting.

Color rendering index (CRI)

Rated from 0 to 100, this value reflects how colors compare to natural light. A higher CRI means better color rendering.

Beam angle

Measured in degrees, it determines how widely the fixture spreads light. A narrower angle is ideal for spot lighting, while a wider angle is suitable for area lighting.

Lifespan

This indicates how many hours the fixture operates without failure or loss of performance. A longer lifespan means lower replacement and maintenance costs.

Certifications and standards

Fixtures should meet relevant quality and safety standards, such as CE certification or IP ratings (protection against moisture and dust).

Thermal management:

An effective cooling system is crucial for the long lifespan of LED lamps. It’s worth checking how the fixture handles heat dissipation.

Criteria for choosing a provider of LED lighting

When deciding what kind of LED lighting to buy, you should consider at least five key criteria. Understanding these will help you make a successful investment.

The time required to recoup the investment costs through savings on operating expenses. A shorter payback period indicates a quicker return on investment, making it a significant factor in your decision.
The warranty is a crucial element when selecting lighting. Traditionally, conventional light sources came with a two-year warranty for the fixture and up to two years for the light source. Nowadays, manufacturers offer warranties ranging from 2 to 5 years, and sometimes even up to 8 or 10 years. A major advantage for users is a unified warranty for both the fixture and the light source, eliminating the need to monitor separate warranty periods.
Customer service is important but subjective. It can be challenging to evaluate, especially at the beginning of a collaboration with a manufacturer. The best approach is to obtain 2-3 offers from the market and analyze key parameters, such as knowledge of lighting, the ability to conduct audits and measurements, responsiveness to inquiries, and the time taken to prepare and deliver the project. Also crucial is support from lighting designers, the research and development department, and control systems experts. Good customer service helps avoid mistakes and provides expert assistance in challenging situations, especially for large and complex projects.
The reliability and lifespan of products are not always directly reflected in the warranty offered by the lighting supplier. For importers whose products may vary between shipments, the warranty doesn’t necessarily eliminate the risk of failures. It’s wise to choose manufacturers who meet the highest quality standards and require certification of their quality management system. An example is the ISO 9001 standard, which can be an important criterion when selecting a lighting supplier.
References are the final, but critical, element in the selection process of a lighting supplier. Reviewing a manufacturer’s offerings through reference points, such as a facility already benefiting from the proposed lighting, can provide valuable insights.
