General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways
Case Study Expressway S6
Modern LED lighting and control system for a section of the S6 expressway between Kołobrzeg and Ustronie Morskie, designed to ensure safety and compliance with the standards set by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA).
As part of the project in collaboration with Apanet and subcontractor Arkowar, we provided lighting luminaires that met the standards of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. We carried out detailed calculations to propose energy-efficient LED solutions that replaced traditional sodium lamps. The implementation involved installing luminaires with high resistance to external conditions and fully integrating them with the control system.

Challenges
Replacing sodium lamps with LED technology
Compliance with luminance and uniformity requirements
Compatibility with the control system
Extending the warranty on the fixtures
The original plan for the S6 road section between Kołobrzeg and Ustronie Morskie involved using traditional sodium lamps. However, modernizing this solution required not only replacing these lamps with advanced LED luminaires but also meeting several critical technical requirements.
Firstly, it was essential to ensure proper luminance and lighting uniformity to enhance road safety in line with the applicable standards. Secondly, the new luminaires needed to be fully compatible with the existing DALI control system from Apanet. Achieving this required precise photometric calculations to select LED luminaires that would meet both technical and operational demands.
Additionally, it was crucial to guarantee that the new LED luminaires came with an extended warranty. This meant providing a high-quality product capable of enduring long-term use, significantly surpassing the lifespan of traditional sodium lamps.
Lighting Concept
The implementation involved three types of LED luminaires: Cordoba LED, Toledo LED, and Skylight LED. The Cordoba LED features high luminous efficacy and special lenses that ensure optimal light distribution. Toledo LED allows for the use of various optics, enabling precise adjustment to project requirements. Skylight LED is distinguished by its high luminous flux, making it ideal for illuminating large areas.
All the luminaires were seamlessly integrated with the DALI control system for enhanced lighting management.
Cordoba LED
A street lighting luminaire with a power range of 81-149W, equipped with control systems, various lenses, and up to a 10-year warranty.
Skylight LED
The LED floodlight offers an impressive light output of up to 44,650 lm, available in 8 power versions ranging from 22W to 278W, with an efficiency of 168 lm/W.
Scope of cooperation
We began the project with a detailed audit of the existing lighting. Based on the collected data, we designed LED luminaires that met the technical requirements and were compatible with the DALI system. Replacing sodium lamps with LEDs allowed us to achieve optimal lighting results in compliance with GDDKiA standards.
Our team delivered and installed LED luminaires along the entire road section. A key element was ensuring proper lighting uniformity and integration with the control system. As a result, the project not only enhances safety but also provides long-term energy savings.
